Chennai's Golden Dog Sculpture Inspires Citywide Search

A missing golden dog turned into Chennai's most heartwarming detective story, thanks to one observant nine-year-old.

Rudra, a student at Adyar Theosophical Academy, noticed something wrong on her daily commute through Besant Nagar. The glowing golden dog sculpture that always accompanied a matching golden woman at the neighborhood's "selfie point" had disappeared.

The nine-year-old is part of the Thiruvanmiyur Changemakers Club, a group of kids tackling civic issues their parents have given up on. When she raised the alarm, photographer Gayatri Nair jumped into action.

Nair shared before and after photos of the lonely golden woman without her canine companion. The response shocked everyone as concern spread across the city and beyond.

The sculptures aren't just street art. They're beloved brand ambassadors for Greater Chennai Corporation's Health Walk initiative on Besant Avenue Road, where walkers gather at the selfie point under shady trees from the Theosophical Society grounds.

Three golden human figures and one dog, all created by sculpture brand Silaii, have become so lifelike that residents talk to them like old friends. "You will find grace in the woman and playfulness in the dog," explains Maverick Prem, who heads branding at Silaii.

The mystery solved itself when Prem discovered the dog had been damaged by rough handling. The sculpture was safely transported to Silaii's factory in Tambaram for repairs, not stolen as feared.
