Chester County Secures Federal Funds for 100 EV Stations

Chester County is making it easier than ever for residents to drive electric.

Thanks to a federal grant program, the Pennsylvania county will add around 100 new electric vehicle charging stations at workplaces and businesses throughout the area. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program is funding the expansion through the state's Department of Transportation.

County officials are strategically placing these stations where people already spend their time. Instead of requiring special trips to charge up, EV drivers will soon be able to power their vehicles while working, shopping, or running daily errands.

The timing couldn't be better. Chester County's EV registrations exploded from 4,500 to 9,000 between 2022 and 2024, making it the second-highest county for electric vehicles in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Only neighboring Montgomery County has more EVs on the road.

The county planning commission is actively reaching out to local municipalities and chambers of commerce to spread the word. Any Chester County business can apply for funding before the August 21 deadline.

This infrastructure investment goes beyond convenience. Rachael Griffith, the planning commission's sustainability director, explains that electric vehicles offer one of the most practical paths to eco-friendly transportation given the county's layout and terrain.

The new charging network will make clean transportation accessible to more residents who might have worried about running out of power mid-commute. As more people feel confident making the switch to electric, the county moves closer to reducing emissions and improving air quality for everyone.

Griffith sees this as preparing for tomorrow's reality, not just today's trends. The future of transportation in Chester County is clearly electric, and these charging stations will serve the community for years to come.
