Childhood Friends Named Co-Captains of Hurricanes Rugby

From sitting in the same high school classroom to leading one of rugby's most exciting teams, Jordie Barrett and Du'Plessis Kirifi are proof that childhood dreams can come true together.

The Wellington Hurricanes announced the two All Blacks stars as co-captains for the 2026 Super Rugby season. Their shared journey started at Francis Douglas Memorial College, where Barrett captained the first XV team with Kirifi by his side.

"We're lucky we've spent a lot of time together in classrooms and on the same team," Barrett said. "To do it alongside Dupes is extra special."

The Hurricanes streamlined their leadership structure this year, moving from four co-captains to two. Barrett brings calm, measured decision-making honed through his role as All Blacks vice-captain, while Kirifi describes their dynamic as "yin and yang."

Barrett returns after a season playing for Irish powerhouse Leinster. This marks his first formal captaincy role with the Hurricanes, though he's no stranger to leadership at the international level.

Kirifi watched his friend become an All Black straight out of school while he worked his way up through academy rugby. "It would be remiss of me not to lean on that experience, but more just as a friend," Kirifi said. "We've always got each other's backs."

Their story shows how genuine friendship can fuel professional excellence. While Barrett developed his leadership skills on the international stage, Kirifi carved his own path, and now they meet at the top as equals.

"Both of us can look fondly on what our careers have looked like, not just professionally but as kids with dreams to achieve big things," Kirifi said. Their mutual respect and different strengths create a leadership model built on trust rather than competition.

Barrett will lead the Hurricanes onto the field Friday night against Moana Pasifika at Sky Stadium in Wellington. Kirifi is recovering from a calf injury but will share the captaincy when he returns.

The broader leadership group still includes former captains Brad Shields, Asafo Aumua, and Billy Proctor, creating depth throughout the team. Barrett and Kirifi see this season as more than an honor—it's an opportunity to turn childhood dreams into championships.
