Megan Lewis thought she knew Dr. Suzanne Pugh well after the doctor delivered both her children and guided her through a difficult first pregnancy. But last Thanksgiving, Lewis discovered their bond went back much further than either woman remembered.
When Lewis's mom handed her a box of childhood keepsakes, she found letters from a pen pal named Suzanne Koziol. Lewis had written to the high school junior back in 1994 and 1995 when she was just a second grader at Fern Hill Elementary School in Pennsylvania. The girls shared their favorite foods, hobbies, and dreams for the future.
A quick Google search for Suzanne Koziol pulled up a professional profile with a photo. Lewis couldn't believe her eyes.
"My mouth dropped," Lewis told ABC News affiliate WPVI. "I could not believe that my pen pal was Dr. Pugh, who was my OB/GYN and delivered my kids: Caroline and Jack."

Lewis immediately sent Dr. Pugh a text with pictures of the old letters. Dr. Pugh, now Suzanne Koziol Pugh, had completely forgotten about the pen pal project from her junior year of high school. "It's such a crazy small world," Pugh said.
The two women had already formed a close relationship during Lewis's pregnancies. Dr. Pugh made sure she was in the delivery room for both Caroline and Jack, especially after supporting Lewis through her challenging first pregnancy.
Sunny's Take
This story reminds us that meaningful connections can weave through our lives in the most unexpected ways. Dr. Pugh went on to fulfill the dreams she likely shared in those childhood letters, becoming a physician who brings new life into the world. Meanwhile, Lewis kept those letters safe in a box for decades, waiting for the perfect moment to reveal their significance.
"It really made us feel like I was meant to take care of her and we were meant to play a role in each other's lives," Dr. Pugh reflected.
Sometimes the people we're meant to know find us twice.
