Chile Builds Giant Solar Battery to Store Sun for Night

Chile is building a massive solar power plant that can store sunshine like a giant battery and release it after dark.

ContourGlobal started construction on Los Maitenes, a groundbreaking facility that combines 131 megawatts of solar panels with batteries big enough to power thousands of homes for four hours straight. The project represents a major leap forward in making renewable energy work around the clock, not just when the sun is shining.

The facility will sit in Chile's O'Higgins Region, close to where people actually need the electricity. That smart location means less energy gets wasted trying to push power through crowded transmission lines, a problem that has caused Chile to throw away excess solar energy on sunny days.

Once complete in 2027, Los Maitenes will generate 220 gigawatt hours of clean electricity annually. That's enough to power tens of thousands of homes while avoiding the carbon emissions of traditional power plants.

The project will put ContourGlobal's Chilean renewable portfolio past the 1 gigawatt milestone. With this addition, the company will operate solar and battery facilities across three Chilean regions, all working together to keep the lights on with clean energy.

The Ripple Effect

The construction phase alone will employ 400 workers at peak activity, with 900 people contributing directly over the 15-month build period. When you count transportation drivers, local suppliers, and service providers, the total employment impact reaches over 1,300 people in the region.

Chile's power system is transforming into a global model for how countries can run on renewable energy without sacrificing reliability. The nation faces a unique challenge: sometimes it generates so much solar power during the day that the grid can't handle it all. Battery storage facilities like Los Maitenes solve that problem by saving the excess sunshine for evening hours when families come home, turn on lights, and cook dinner.

ContourGlobal calls this their "Sun at Night" business model. The concept is elegant: capture solar energy when it's abundant and cheap, store it in massive batteries, then sell it during peak evening hours when demand and prices are highest.

The company has already secured a long-term contract covering both daytime and nighttime electricity blocks, giving the project financial stability while proving that stored solar power can compete with traditional power plants.

Beyond the numbers, this facility shows the world that clean energy doesn't have to mean rolling blackouts or unreliable power, proving that sunshine can keep the lights on 24 hours a day.
