
Chile Builds Massive Battery Network to Save Wasted Solar Power
Chile is solving a good problem to have: so much solar and wind power that it can't use it all. The country is now building enough battery storage to capture that clean energy and use it when the sun goes down.
Chile produced so much renewable energy in early 2026 that it had to throw away enough clean electricity to power millions of homes. Now the country is racing to build one of the world's largest battery networks to make sure none of that sunshine goes to waste.
The South American nation wasted 2,680 gigawatt-hours of solar and wind power in the first seven months of this year. That's enough electricity to charge every electric car in California multiple times over, simply disappearing because the grid couldn't handle it all at once.
But here's where the story gets exciting. Chile isn't backing away from clean energy. Instead, it's building massive battery systems to store all that extra power.
By the end of July, Chile had 2,655 megawatts of batteries already storing energy. That's just the beginning. Another 8,191 megawatts are either being tested or under construction right now.

These batteries work like giant power banks for an entire country. When the sun blazes during the day and solar panels produce more electricity than people need, the batteries soak it up. Then when evening comes and families turn on lights and cook dinner, that stored sunshine flows back into homes.
The challenge happened because Chile's clean energy revolution worked almost too well. Solar farms in the sunny north produced electricity faster than transmission lines could move it south to cities. Strong winds generated power when businesses were closed and demand was low.
The Bright Side
Without battery storage, wind and solar could have provided nearly half of Chile's electricity in 2025. With curtailment, they still delivered an impressive 42.4 percent. Now, as batteries come online, that gap is closing fast.
About 71 percent of the batteries under construction connect directly to solar farms. Another 22 percent are standalone storage facilities that can grab excess power from any source.
In July alone, renewable sources generated 38.6 percent of Chile's electricity. Solar provided 17.5 percent while wind contributed 16.5 percent. As more batteries switch on in coming months, even more of that clean generation will reach homes instead of going unused.
Chile's expanding storage pipeline shows how countries can solve the puzzle of intermittent renewable energy. The solution isn't choosing between clean power and reliable power. It's building the batteries to have both.
