Chile Gets 606 MWh Solar Battery to Store Sun All Night

Chile is getting one of Latin America's largest solar battery systems, proving that renewable energy can work even when the sun goes down.

Sungrow, a global energy technology company, will deliver a massive 606 MWh battery storage system for the Observatorio solar project in northern Chile. The system can store four hours of solar power generated during the day and release it during evening peak demand.

The project pairs a 135 MW solar farm with the giant battery, creating a reliable clean energy source that works day and night. When the sun shines, the panels generate electricity for immediate use while charging the batteries. After sunset, the stored energy flows to the grid exactly when families turn on lights, cook dinner, and use the most power.

Tomás Anuch, Chief Operating Officer of Verano Energy, said the storage system unlocks the full potential of solar power. "We can provide greater flexibility to the power system and deliver solutions that meet the needs of a market increasingly focused on renewable energy integration," he explained.

The project comes with a 25-year service agreement, ensuring the system stays operational for a quarter century. That long-term commitment signals serious confidence in battery technology as a cornerstone of clean energy infrastructure.

Chile has become one of the most dynamic markets in Latin America for battery storage projects. The country's abundant sunshine makes solar power cheap and plentiful, but storage solves the puzzle of what to do with all that energy when demand is low.
