Chile Hits 52% Renewable Energy in Historic Green Milestone

Chile reached a powerful milestone in May 2026 that should inspire the world: renewable energy now accounts for 52% of the country's total power capacity. That's over 20,000 megawatts of clean electricity lighting homes, powering businesses, and proving that green energy can truly compete.

Solar power leads the charge with more than 12,000 megawatts installed, making up 61% of Chile's renewable fleet. Wind farms contribute another 6,310 megawatts, while biomass, small hydro, geothermal, and concentrated solar round out the mix.

The numbers tell a story of momentum building on momentum. In April alone, renewable plants generated 47% of Chile's electricity, with solar contributing more than half of that clean power.

But Chile isn't stopping here. Another 185 renewable projects are currently under construction, adding 4,176 megawatts to the grid. Solar projects make up 90% of what's coming next, showing where the country sees its brightest future.

Everyday Chileans are joining the movement too. More than 41,000 homes and businesses have installed their own solar systems, generating power and selling surplus electricity back to the grid. In May alone, these distributed systems totaled over 500,000 kilowatts of capacity.

The government continues supporting new development, with 86 major renewable projects currently under environmental review representing $44 billion in investment. Two solar projects totaling 213 megawatts got approval in April, both including battery storage to keep power flowing when the sun sets.

The Ripple Effect

Chile's transformation shows other nations what's possible when commitment meets action. The country has moved from renewable energy being a small fraction of its power mix to becoming the majority in just years, not decades.

This shift means cleaner air for Chilean cities, reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels, and thousands of jobs in the growing green economy. As Chile connects more renewable capacity across its National Electric System, entire regions benefit from locally generated clean power.

Other developing nations watching Chile's progress now have a roadmap proving that renewable energy can scale rapidly and affordably.
