Chile Powers the Night with Giant Battery Deal
A Spanish energy company just signed a 15-year deal to power Chile's nights using the Americas' largest battery storage system. The groundbreaking contract proves renewable energy can now work around the clock.
Chile is lighting up its nights with clean energy, thanks to a game-changing agreement that proves solar power doesn't have to stop when the sun goes down.
Spanish renewable energy company Grenergy has signed its biggest contract ever: a 15-year deal to deliver 1 terawatt hour of electricity annually during nighttime hours in Chile. The contract kicks off between July and October 2026 with an unnamed global utility company.
The electricity will flow from Elena, a massive battery storage facility in Chile's Antofagasta region that's currently the largest in the Americas. The system stores 3.5 gigawatt hours of clean energy generated during sunny days and releases it after dark when families turn on lights and cook dinner.
Elena isn't done growing. Grenergy plans to double its capacity to 7 gigawatt hours by 2028, making it even more powerful.
The facility recently opened with 624 battery containers holding 6,240 individual battery units. It's part of Grenergy's Oasis de Atacama platform, which combines 2.5 gigawatts of solar panels with 14.1 gigawatt hours of battery storage.

The Ripple Effect
This deal represents a turning point for renewable energy worldwide. For years, critics argued solar and wind couldn't reliably power communities because the sun doesn't always shine and wind doesn't always blow.
Large-scale battery storage solves that problem. Chile is now proving that clean energy can power homes, businesses, and hospitals 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Grenergy is replicating this solar-plus-storage model in Spain and expanding throughout Chile. The company's combined pipeline includes 5 gigawatts of solar capacity and 22 gigawatt hours of energy storage.
The long-term agreement also gives Grenergy stable revenue for 15 years, making it easier to finance future clean energy projects. That financial certainty could accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels across South America.
Separately, Grenergy is developing infrastructure to support AI-focused data centers in Chile, with plans for 1 gigawatt of computing capacity. The initiative could attract $25 billion in digital investment over three years, all powered by renewable energy from northern Chile.
Chile's sunny Atacama Desert is becoming a clean energy powerhouse, showing the world how to keep the lights on without burning coal or gas.
