Chile Solar Farm Gets 606MWh Battery to Store Clean Energy

Chile is building a solar farm that can store enough energy to power thousands of homes through the night.

Independent power producer Verano Energy just announced plans for a 135-megawatt solar farm paired with a massive 606-megawatt-hour battery system in Chile's O'Higgins region. The battery storage system will capture excess solar energy during sunny days and release it when the sun sets, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.

Chinese manufacturer Sungrow will supply the PowerTitan 2 battery units and solar inverters for the project. The company is also committing to a 25-year service agreement, ensuring the system stays operational for decades to come.

The facility, called Observatorio, will begin commercial operations in early 2028. Chilean utility Copec EMOAC has already signed on to purchase the electricity generated.

The Ripple Effect

This project represents more than just another solar farm. It's part of Chile's larger transformation into a renewable energy powerhouse.

Verano Energy's chief operating officer, Tomas Anuch, explained that energy storage allows the company to harness the full potential of solar power while bringing greater flexibility to Chile's electrical grid. As more countries struggle with how to integrate renewable energy reliably, this project offers a working solution.

Verano Energy has already developed over 60 solar projects totaling more than 800 megawatts across Chile and Colombia. The company has another 2.5 gigawatts of renewable projects and 2 gigawatt-hours of battery storage in various development stages.

Their Domeyko Solar project, combining 83 megawatts of solar with 660 megawatt-hours of battery storage, recently completed installation and will begin operations by the end of 2026. That makes it one of the first major solar-plus-storage facilities in Latin America.

The growth of battery technology has been a game changer for renewable energy. Just five years ago, storing solar energy at this scale was prohibitively expensive. Today, it's becoming standard practice.
