Chile Solar Now Powers 31% of Country's Electricity

Chile is proving that a solar-powered future isn't just possible—it's already happening.

The country installed 1,127 megawatts of solar panels in 2025, bringing its total solar capacity to 11,634 megawatts, according to Chile's National Energy Commission. To put that in perspective, solar energy now accounts for 31.1% of all electricity generated across the nation.

Even more impressive: renewable sources excluding large hydropower now make up 50.8% of Chile's total energy generation. Wind contributes another 15.7%, meaning clean energy is officially powering more than half the country.

Chile's geographic advantages make it a renewable energy powerhouse. The Atacama Desert in northern Chile receives some of the highest solar radiation levels on Earth, creating perfect conditions for massive solar farms that can generate power almost constantly.

The momentum isn't slowing down either. Right now, 4,153 megawatts of renewable projects are under construction, scheduled to come online by June 2027. That's enough additional capacity to power millions more homes.

Another 89 renewable projects are currently in the environmental approval stage. These include 67 solar plants, 20 wind farms, and two mini-hydro projects that together represent 10,511 megawatts of new capacity and $26.5 billion in investment.

The Ripple Effect

Chile's renewable energy transformation is creating waves far beyond its borders. The country is becoming a blueprint for how nations can transition away from fossil fuels without sacrificing economic growth or energy reliability.

The investment flooding into Chilean renewable projects is creating thousands of jobs in construction, engineering, and maintenance. Local communities near solar installations benefit from improved infrastructure and tax revenue that funds schools and healthcare.
