Chile's Largest Battery Project Hits Construction Phase

Italian clean energy developer Limes Renewable Energy just reached a major milestone for its largest battery storage project in Chile, bringing the country closer to a cleaner energy future.

The company's Huañil project, located in Chile's Coquimbo region just north of Santiago, has reached the ready-to-build stage. This 200-megawatt system will store enough energy to power thousands of homes when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing.

The achievement marks Limes' first project outside Italy to reach construction readiness. The company has been quietly building a portfolio of clean energy projects in Chile, including two other battery systems and a solar farm paired with storage.

"Bringing our first Chilean project to ready-to-build is a defining moment for us in the region," said Martin Libra, who leads Limes' Latin American operations. He noted that two more Chilean projects will reach this stage in the coming months.

Chile has emerged as a hotspot for battery storage development this year. Earlier in 2026, the massive Oasis de Atacama solar and storage project inaugurated a 3.5-gigawatt-hour component, with plans to eventually reach 14 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity.

The Ripple Effect

Battery storage projects like Huañil solve one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: keeping the lights on when solar panels go dark and wind turbines stop spinning. As Chile adds more solar and wind farms, these giant batteries act like shock absorbers for the electrical grid, storing excess clean energy and releasing it exactly when needed.

The technology transforms renewable energy from intermittent to reliable. Chile's desert north produces abundant solar power during the day, and battery systems can now save that sunshine for evening peak hours when families come home and turn on appliances.

The wave of battery projects sweeping through Chile signals something bigger: clean energy is becoming dependable energy. Countries worldwide are watching Chile's rapid buildout of storage infrastructure as a model for their own transitions away from fossil fuels.

With multiple gigawatt-scale projects now under construction, Chile is proving that renewable energy paired with storage can power modern life without compromise.
