Chile's Solar-Powered Data Center Runs on Sun and Seawater

The world's most sun-drenched desert is about to become home to one of its cleanest data centers.

Solaer Renewable Energies has secured a 5,000-acre site in Chile's Atacama region to build a data center that runs completely on renewable power. The facility will tap into 197 megawatts of solar energy and 500 megawatt-hours of battery storage, with desalinated water keeping the servers cool.

The timing couldn't be better. As artificial intelligence and cloud computing explode in popularity, data centers are devouring electricity at unprecedented rates. Traditional facilities guzzle power from fossil fuel grids and drain local water supplies, creating an environmental headache that's only getting worse.

Solaer's solution tackles both problems at once. The company's existing ENAPAC project already powers major mining operations in northern Chile with clean energy and desalinated water pumped through 250 miles of pipelines. Now they're extending that same infrastructure to support the massive computing power AI developers need.

The 36-month evaluation phase gives the company time to complete permits and feasibility studies before committing to the full build. If everything checks out, the operational lease will run for 25 years with an option to extend to 40.

The Ripple Effect

This project could reshape where tech companies build their computing infrastructure. For decades, data centers clustered near existing power grids and water sources, often straining both. The Atacama approach flips that model by creating abundant renewable resources from scratch in one of Earth's most inhospitable environments.

The Atacama Desert receives more solar radiation than anywhere else on the planet, making it ideal for round-the-clock solar generation paired with battery storage. What was once considered too remote for development now becomes a competitive advantage.

Other hyperscale operators are watching closely. If Solaer proves the model works, expect more data centers to sprout in sunny, empty spaces where clean power can be generated without competing with homes and businesses for resources.

Chile benefits too. The project brings high-tech investment and jobs to a remote region while establishing the country as a hub for sustainable computing infrastructure that serves global markets.
