China Approves First Fatty Liver Drug for 200M Adults

Millions of people in China living with severe fatty liver disease now have their first real treatment option after regulators approved the weight-loss drug Wegovy for the condition.

China's National Medical Products Administration approved the medication on September 10 for adults with moderate to advanced liver damage from a condition called MASH. It's the country's first approved drug specifically for this severe form of fatty liver disease.

The timing couldn't be better. One in three Chinese adults has fatty liver disease, and over 80% of people with obesity deal with the condition. An estimated 6.7% of adults have the more severe MASH form, which involves dangerous inflammation from excess fat buildup in the liver.

Until now, doctors could only tell patients to change their lifestyle habits. There were no effective medications to offer, according to Jia Jidong, director of the Liver Research Center at Beijing Friendship Hospital.

The drug works by mimicking a natural hormone released when we eat, which helps suppress appetite and reduce weight. Originally developed for diabetes, semaglutide (sold as Wegovy) has become a game-changer for weight management in recent years.

The Ripple Effect

The approval reaches far beyond individual patients. Fatty liver disease often goes unnoticed in its early stages because it can be completely silent and symptomless. Experts hope this new treatment option will raise public awareness and encourage more people to get tested before the condition advances.

The clinical results are promising. In trials with nearly 1,200 MASH patients, about two-thirds saw their condition resolve after taking the medication. More than a third experienced actual reductions in liver scarring, something previously thought difficult to reverse.

This breakthrough arrives as liver cancer forecasts grow more concerning. Cases caused by MASH are expected to jump from 8% to 11% globally by 2050, according to research published by the Lancet Commission on liver cancer.

Other pharmaceutical companies are racing to develop similar treatments, with multiple drugs now in China's fast-track approval pipeline. What was once a condition with no medication options now has growing competition to serve patients better.

For the estimated 200 million Chinese adults affected by fatty liver disease, this approval represents something simple but profound: real hope where there was none before.
