China Blends Hydrogen Into Gas for 100,000 Homes

A Chinese city just flipped the switch on a project that could reshape how the world thinks about cleaning up our energy supply.

Weifang, a city in eastern China's Shandong province, has started blending hydrogen directly into its natural gas network. The project now provides energy to 100,000 households using gas mixed with up to 10 percent hydrogen.

The scale makes this a world first. The equipment can handle up to 30,000 cubic meters of hydrogen-blended gas, creating a model that other cities could follow.

The math gets even more exciting when you zoom out. If China applied this 10 percent hydrogen blend across all its urban gas networks, the country would save roughly 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. That would also cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 30 million tonnes each year.

To put those numbers in perspective, China consumed 426.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas last year. A 10 percent blend would reduce that consumption by more than 3 percent without requiring households to change a single appliance or habit.

The timing matters too. Global energy prices have been climbing due to ongoing tensions affecting major shipping routes in the Middle East. China gets about 30 percent of its liquefied natural gas from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, so reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels brings both environmental and economic benefits.

The beauty of hydrogen blending lies in its simplicity. Unlike building entirely new hydrogen infrastructure or replacing every gas appliance, this approach works with existing pipelines and equipment. Households don't need to do anything differently.
