China Builds 500GW Green Energy—Grid Can't Keep Up Yet

China is building more wind and solar capacity than every other country combined, putting it on track to hit its 2030 renewable energy target by the end of this year.

The numbers are staggering. More than 500 gigawatts of utility-scale wind and solar projects are currently under construction out of 1,360 gigawatts planned, according to a new report from Global Energy Monitor. That's enough to power hundreds of millions of homes with clean energy.

But there's a catch that's actually driving innovation. Much of this renewable power is being generated in China's northwest and northern regions, far from the eastern cities where people and businesses need it most.

The country needs about 27 specialized ultra-high voltage transmission lines to carry this clean electricity across vast distances. Current plans outline capacity for only about 10 of these lines, creating a temporary bottleneck.

Some regions are already feeling the squeeze. Northwestern provinces like Qinghai and Xinjiang had to curtail 10 to 17 percent of potential solar power last year simply because there was nowhere to send it.

The Bright Side

The transmission gap is pushing China toward creative solutions that could benefit the entire renewable energy sector. Developers are increasingly pairing long-distance power lines with local energy storage, industrial parks powered directly by green electricity, and green hydrogen production.

These innovations turn a logistical challenge into an opportunity. Rather than letting clean energy go to waste, projects are finding ways to use it right where it's generated.

The approach matters globally because China installs more renewable capacity than any other nation. Solutions developed there could help other countries facing similar growing pains as they scale up clean energy.

Aiqun Yu, a research analyst at Global Energy Monitor, notes that success won't be measured just by gigawatts added, but by how much coal these renewable projects actually replace. Early industrial projects show promise, with facilities in Inner Mongolia already reducing coal consumption through paired solar and wind installations.

The challenge ahead is ensuring these renewable megabases become true coal replacements rather than just additions to the existing system. With wind and solar currently accounting for one-fifth of electricity on China's long-distance transmission network, there's significant room for growth as infrastructure catches up with ambition.

The real story here is that China's renewable buildout is so aggressive, so ahead of schedule, that infrastructure is racing to keep pace.
