China Installs First Turbine 55 Miles Offshore

Imagine a wind turbine powerful enough to light up an entire neighborhood, spinning 55 miles out at sea where the ocean is deeper than a 15-story building is tall.

China just installed the first of 31 massive turbines at its most distant offshore wind farm yet, marking a major milestone in clean energy technology. The project sits in waters south of Hailing Island in Guangdong Province, with some turbines reaching 55 miles from shore.

Each turbine generates 16.2 megawatts of electricity, making them the most powerful offshore wind turbines ever deployed in China. That's enough clean power from a single turbine to supply roughly 22,000 homes.

The wind farm covers 54 square kilometers of ocean, where waters range from 150 to 164 feet deep. Engineers are using smart technology and artificial intelligence to monitor the turbines in real time, diagnose problems before they become serious, and coordinate maintenance across the entire farm.

These innovations aren't just impressive on paper. The smart systems are expected to boost electricity generation by 2 percent, slash equipment failures by 20 percent, and increase overall returns by up to 10 percent.

The Ripple Effect

Once fully operational, this single wind farm will generate 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity every year. That's enough to power about 700,000 households across the region.

The environmental impact adds up fast. The project will save 500,000 tons of coal annually and prevent 1.26 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year.

This achievement comes as China races ahead in offshore wind development. Just this week, the country connected its deepest offshore wind project to the power grid in the Yellow Sea. Days before that, new high-capacity turbines went online in the South China Sea.

China now leads the world in total offshore wind capacity and has held that position for five consecutive years. As of February, the country's total wind power capacity reached 650 million kilowatts, up nearly 23 percent from the previous year.

The country plans to build major offshore wind bases across four seas during the next five years, aiming to exceed 100 million kilowatts of offshore wind power by 2030.

What makes this possible is China's complete supply chain for wind technology, from manufacturing the massive turbine blades to developing the artificial intelligence that keeps everything running smoothly.
