China Installs Record 434 Gigawatts of Clean Energy in 2025

China just built more clean energy in one year than most countries have in their entire history.

The world's second-largest economy added 315 gigawatts of solar power and 119 gigawatts of wind power in 2025, according to new data from China's National Energy Administration. That's enough renewable capacity to power hundreds of millions of homes.

To put those numbers in perspective, imagine installing two wind turbines every hour for an entire year. Or picture 500 million solar panels covering an area equal to 20 football fields per hour, every single hour.

China now holds 15 consecutive years as the world's leader in installed wind power capacity. Total power generation capacity jumped 16.1% compared to the previous year, a massive leap driven primarily by renewables.

The clean energy explosion positions China to replace fossil fuel power generation well into 2026, according to Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. Despite being the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, the country is making measurable progress toward its ambitious climate targets.

China aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030, cut them at least 7% by 2035, and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. These renewable additions represent tangible steps toward those goals.

The Bright Side

While coal and gas capacity also increased by 93 gigawatts, the clean energy additions dwarf those gains. The renewable surge demonstrates that economic powerhouses can pursue industrial growth while simultaneously tackling climate change.

China's renewable energy investments create ripples beyond its borders too. As the country scales up production of solar panels and wind turbines, costs drop globally, making clean energy more affordable for developing nations.
