The facility behind this record is itself a marvel of green technology. Powered entirely by 800 megawatts of renewable energy, the plant produces 32,000 tons of green hydrogen and 180,000 tons of green ammonia annually. It started commercial operations just one year ago in July 2025.

Green ammonia offers a practical solution for storing and transporting renewable energy. Unlike fossil fuel-based ammonia, this version produces zero carbon emissions because it's made using hydrogen derived from renewable electricity and water.

The momentum isn't limited to Asia. Twelve major renewable hydrogen projects are already under construction across Europe, representing 3 gigawatts of capacity and 13 billion euros in investment. These facilities span Sweden, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Austria and Portugal.

The most promising projects are integrated into existing industrial operations rather than standing alone. They're being built near steel mills, refineries, chemical plants and aviation fuel producers who will actually use the hydrogen.

Latvia is moving forward with its own piece of the puzzle. The country just launched public consultations for a hydrogen pipeline that will form part of the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor. The consultation process involves ten municipalities and nearly 1,800 land parcels.

The Ripple Effect

This infrastructure buildout represents more than just new facilities. It's creating the foundation for industries to decarbonize at scale. Steel production, aviation fuel, fertilizers and chemicals can all shift away from fossil fuels as hydrogen becomes readily available.

The challenge now is synchronizing three elements that are moving at different speeds: production capacity, transportation infrastructure and actual customer demand. Europe has created strong regulations defining renewable hydrogen and requiring its use in certain applications, but turning ambitious plans into operating facilities takes time.
