China's EVs Now Charge to 70% in Under 10 Minutes
Electric vehicle charging just got as fast as a coffee break. Chinese battery makers are unveiling technology that powers EVs from 10% to 70% in less than 10 minutes, finally matching the convenience of gas stations.
The last major hurdle keeping electric vehicles from beating gas cars just got solved in Beijing.
At the Beijing Auto Show, Chinese battery makers unveiled charging technology that fills an EV battery to 70% in under 10 minutes. Companies like CALB Group, EVE Energy, and Sunwoda are all racing to deliver single-digit charging times, transforming what used to be a 30-minute wait into something barely longer than pumping gas.
This breakthrough started when industry giants BYD and CATL launched batteries that charge from 10% to 97% in less than 10 minutes. Now smaller competitors are following suit, creating a technology race that benefits everyone on the road.
The innovation isn't stopping at cars. Sunwoda extended the fast-charging tech to electric bicycles, creating batteries that jump from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes and last for over 2,000 cycles. That means years of reliable use for everyday commuters.
Even Nio, a startup famous for battery swapping stations, joined the show with a live demonstration completing a full battery swap in three minutes. Drivers pulled in, got a fresh battery, and drove away faster than most people finish ordering lunch.

"The time needed to replenish energy is perhaps the final frontier where electric vehicles have yet to fully surpass petrol cars in China," said Li Xianyang, a battery specialist at Sunwoda. His company and others are now crossing that finish line.
The Ripple Effect
This charging revolution reaches far beyond convenience. Faster charging means more people can confidently switch to electric vehicles without worrying about long road trips or finding time to charge. Gas stations took minutes, not hours, and now EVs can promise the same.
The competition driving these breakthroughs also means prices will likely drop as companies fight for market share. What starts as premium technology in 2026 could become standard equipment within a few years, making clean transportation accessible to millions more drivers.
The technology also proves that the supposed limitations of electric vehicles were never permanent barriers. They were just problems waiting for the right solution, and engineers in China just delivered it ahead of schedule.
A decade ago, electric cars meant planning your life around charging times. Today in Beijing, they're showing the world that electric can finally mean freedom.
