China's Hwatsing Achieves Chip Polishing Breakthrough

China just notched a quiet but significant win in the race to build better computer chips.

Hwatsing Technology, a company based in Tianjin, unveiled a breakthrough measurement system for chip wafer polishing this month. The innovation might sound technical, but it solves a real problem: how to flatten and smooth silicon wafers with precision while catching defects in real time.

The new system works directly inside the polishing workflow, measuring wafers before and after smoothing. That means manufacturers can spot problems immediately instead of discovering flawed chips later in production. The result? Less waste, better consistency, and chips that work reliably in everything from electric vehicles to smartphones.

Hwatsing already shipped the system to a major Chinese silicon producer. The technology targets mature chips used in power devices, sensors, and telecommunications equipment, the workhorses that keep modern infrastructure running.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough matters beyond one company's success. While headlines focus on advanced lithography machines (where China still depends entirely on foreign suppliers), Chinese firms have been steadily mastering other essential chipmaking steps.

Hwatsing's market share jumped from just 1% in 2018 to 37% globally last year. The company now controls 85% of China's domestic wafer polishing market. Across all chip manufacturing equipment in China, domestic suppliers reached 21% market share in 2025, up from nearly zero a few years ago.

The progress shows how innovation happens in unexpected places. Advanced lithography remains out of reach, with Dutch giant ASML blocked from selling its best machines to China. But polishing, measuring, and other "unglamorous" manufacturing steps? Those are becoming Chinese strengths.

For the global tech industry, this creates new options. More competition in chip equipment means lower costs and less dependence on single suppliers. For manufacturers worldwide, alternative sources of reliable polishing equipment could ease supply chain pressures that have plagued the industry for years.

The technology directly addresses real inefficiencies too. Traditional production lines require moving wafers between polishing and measurement stations, creating delays and contamination risks. Hwatsing's integrated approach eliminates those gaps.

China still faces enormous challenges in achieving full chip self-sufficiency, but progress in wafer polishing proves that determination and focused investment can close technical gaps once thought insurmountable.
