Chinese Activist Reaches Canada After Month-Long Standoff

After being blocked once and detained for three months, Chinese democracy activist Zhang Xinyan finally touched down in Vancouver on Monday to cheers from supporters and relief from human rights advocates worldwide.

Zhang, 55, spent years living in Thailand after fleeing China in 2014 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual movement banned by the Chinese government. She held UN-approved refugee status when Thai immigration officials arrested her in May for an expired visa.

The situation grew tense when Canadian officials approved her resettlement application and booked her a flight to Vancouver in July. Thai authorities prevented her from boarding and returned her to the detention center in Bangkok, raising fears she might be deported to Hong Kong instead.

Hong Kong police had issued arrest warrants for Zhang and 18 other overseas activists in 2025 under controversial national security laws. If sent to Hong Kong, she would have become the first person charged under those laws to be forcibly returned and imprisoned.

Canadian diplomats refused to back down. Toronto-based activist Sheng Xue, who championed Zhang's case, said Ottawa's firm stance combined with pressure from the UN refugee agency and Thai lawmakers ultimately changed minds in Bangkok.

Senior Thai police officers personally escorted Zhang to the airport the night before her Monday flight. Canadian diplomats accompanied her through every step to ensure her safe departure from the country.
