Chinese EV Charges 70% in 10 Minutes for $54,000

Electric cars just got a whole lot faster, both on the road and at the charging station.

Chinese automaker Zeekr's 001 Fifth Anniversary Edition sold out so quickly after its April launch that the company just brought it back by popular demand. At $54,000, this isn't just affordable for what you get. It's a glimpse into how quickly EV technology is advancing.

The numbers sound almost too good to be true. The car rockets from zero to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds thanks to 912 horsepower from dual electric motors. That's supercar territory for the price of a well-equipped midsize sedan.

But the real breakthrough is happening when the car sits still. Zeekr's ultra-fast charging technology can take the 103 kWh battery from 10% to 80% charge in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions. That's barely enough time to grab a coffee and use the restroom.

For context, most current EVs take 30 to 45 minutes to charge that much, even on the fastest chargers available. Range anxiety has been one of the biggest barriers keeping people from switching to electric vehicles. Technology like this could erase that concern entirely.

The car achieves this through what's called 6C charging on a 900-volt electrical architecture. Without getting too technical, it means the battery can accept energy much faster than traditional EVs without overheating or degrading. The same battery tech that charges quickly also delivers serious performance, with a top speed of 174 mph.

Zeekr, owned by automotive giant Geely, designed this as a premium performance vehicle. It includes racing-grade KW suspension, powerful Brembo brakes, and lightweight carbon fiber body parts. These aren't just for show. They suggest the car can actually handle the curves, not just the straight lines.

The Ripple Effect

While this particular model is only available in China right now, the technology inside represents a major leap forward for the entire electric vehicle industry. When Chinese automakers push boundaries like this, it creates competitive pressure that benefits car buyers everywhere. Other manufacturers will need to match or beat these capabilities to stay relevant.

The immediate sellout and restock show strong consumer appetite for EVs that don't compromise on performance or convenience. As charging infrastructure catches up to support these ultra-fast speeds globally, the transition away from gas-powered vehicles could accelerate dramatically.
