Chinese EVs Ace Europe's Toughest Safety Tests

Three Chinese electric vehicles just proved they're among the safest cars on the road, earning perfect scores from Europe's toughest safety testing program.

The GAC Aion UT, Geely E2, and Leapmotor B05 all received five-star ratings from Euro NCAP, Europe's gold standard for vehicle safety. These aren't easy wins: Euro NCAP's tests are significantly more rigorous than America's own safety standards, which still allow automakers to self-certify their vehicles.

The achievement matters because it challenges a persistent narrative that Chinese EVs cut corners on quality. These three models proved they can meet or exceed the safety standards expected by the world's most demanding consumers.

The Geely E2, China's best-selling car last year, earned an impressive 95% rating for post-crash safety. The Leapmotor B05 scored maximum points in both side barrier and side pole impacts, with its center airbag providing full protection against occupant head contact. The GAC Aion UT achieved a 91% crash protection score despite being from a brand still in its infancy.

"Today's results clearly demonstrate that Chinese carmakers are still working hard to match the high standards expected by European consumers," said Dr. Aled Williams, Programme Director at Euro NCAP. His team puts vehicles through tests that include everything from collision avoidance systems to vulnerable road user protection.

The timing adds context to ongoing debates about vehicle safety standards. A study during transatlantic trade negotiations found that European car models were, on average, 33% safer than American ones in terms of risk of serious injury in common front-side crashes. Motor vehicle safety experts have warned for years that America's once groundbreaking safety program hasn't kept pace with innovations.
