Chinese EVs Now Charge in Under 4 Minutes

Charging an electric car in China now takes about as long as running inside a gas station to grab a snack.

Chinese automaker Geely just launched vehicles with batteries that charge from 10% to 70% in 4 minutes and 22 seconds. BYD's latest models take just 5 minutes for the same charge, while battery giant CATL has demonstrated technology that charges from 10% to 80% in 3 minutes and 44 seconds.

The speed improvements are so dramatic that manufacturers now quote charging times down to the second. It's like the difference between saying a race took "about 10 seconds" versus reporting a new world record of 9.58 seconds.

These batteries are already on the road, not just sitting in laboratories. BYD has installed thousands of ultra-fast 1,500-kilowatt chargers across China, with plans to reach 20,000 by the end of the year. Geely and state-owned Dongfeng have rolled out their own networks of equally powerful chargers.

The technology solves one of the biggest concerns people have about switching to electric vehicles. While EV owners know that home charging overnight is actually more convenient than gas stations, the perception that road trips require long waits has slowed adoption.

For comparison, the fastest-charging electric vehicles in America take around 18 minutes to reach 80% battery. That's perfectly adequate for most drivers, who need bathroom and food breaks on long trips anyway. But for people who rely entirely on public charging, especially in crowded cities, a 4-minute charge beats an 18-minute wait.

The Ripple Effect

These ultra-fast charging stations can serve many more cars per day, reducing the land needed for charging infrastructure in space-constrained urban areas. That's especially important in cities where apartment dwellers can't charge at home.

The rapid infrastructure rollout also creates momentum for electric vehicle adoption. When charging becomes as quick and easy as filling a gas tank, one of the last barriers to switching disappears. China's vehicles with this technology cost well under $30,000, making the benefits accessible to everyday drivers.

Meanwhile, America's first comparable vehicle will be the Mercedes AMG GT EV, which charges in about 11 minutes but will cost well into six figures and see limited production.

The charging revolution shows how quickly the electric vehicle landscape is changing, turning yesterday's impressive numbers into today's baseline.
