Chinese Rocket Struck by Lightning, Completes Mission

A rocket launch in China turned into an electrifying spectacle when lightning struck the spacecraft mid-flight, and the mission succeeded anyway.

The Long March-3B rocket lifted off Thursday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern China, carrying a communications satellite to orbit. Thirty seconds into flight, a bolt of lightning crackled across the sky and struck the rocket's tip, captured in stunning footage that shows the crowd's cheers turning to gasps of disbelief.

Despite the dramatic strike, the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation confirmed the rocket safely reached space and deployed its satellite as planned. The spacecraft continued its journey unfazed, a testament to robust engineering design.

This isn't the first time a rocket has survived such a cosmic zap. NASA's Apollo 12 mission in 1969 took two lightning strikes during launch, with all three astronauts aboard making it safely to space despite some instrument damage.

Not every lightning strike ends so well. In 1987, an unmanned Atlas-Centaur 67 rocket was struck 48 seconds into flight, causing a computer malfunction that sent the rocket off course and broke it apart mid-flight.

That disaster led NASA to create strict Lightning Launch Commit Criteria, placing tighter restrictions on weather conditions for launches. These rules have helped prevent similar incidents for decades.

Modern rockets are built to handle the unexpected, including direct lightning strikes. Engineers design spacecraft with conductive materials and protective systems specifically to survive electrical surges from storms.

The successful completion of this mission demonstrates how far aerospace engineering has come. What could have been catastrophic became just another obstacle overcome through careful design and preparation.
