Christchurch Adds Nonstop Flights to Tokyo, Singapore, Perth
New Zealand's South Island just became way easier to reach from Asia and Australia. Air New Zealand is launching three new international routes from Christchurch, reconnecting the region to the world after years of limited service.
South Island travelers are about to have a much shorter journey to some of the world's most popular destinations.
Air New Zealand announced it will launch nonstop flights from Christchurch to Singapore, Tokyo, and Perth starting this October. The three routes restore connections that disappeared years ago, giving South Island residents direct access to major travel hubs without flying through Auckland first.
The airline previously operated these routes but suspended them between 2015 and 2020. Now, thanks to Boeing 787 aircraft returning to service after engine maintenance issues and new planes joining the fleet, the expansion is finally possible.
The first flight takes off to Singapore on October 28, followed by Tokyo on November 28 and Perth on November 30. Tickets go on sale Wednesday.
Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar said the routes represent a strategic shift in how the South Island connects to the globe. The airline signed a partnership agreement with Christchurch Airport to support long-term growth and improve the traveler experience across the region.
Christchurch Airport CEO Justin Watson called the announcement a milestone that reinforces the city's role as a gateway to the South Island. The airport now serves 15 international destinations.
The Ripple Effect
Travel experts say the new routes will transform tourism patterns across New Zealand. Instead of funneling all international visitors through Auckland, travelers can now fly directly into the South Island and explore from there.
Japan has become a breakout destination for New Zealanders, with bookings up 14% last year according to House of Travel. The Tokyo route makes it dramatically easier for South Island residents to visit.
Singapore serves as a crucial hub connecting travelers to Southeast Asia and Europe, while Perth opens access to Western Australia's natural wonders like the Kimberley region and Ningaloo Reef.
House of Travel CEO David Coombes said direct flights create their own momentum. When airlines back a market with regular service, travelers follow and demand grows naturally.
The timing couldn't be better for a region that's been asking for better international connections for years.
