New Zealand Launches First Hydrogen Car Rentals
Corporate travelers in New Zealand can now rent hydrogen-powered cars for the first time, making cutting-edge clean technology accessible to everyday drivers. Three Toyota Mirai vehicles just joined a rental fleet, offering a glimpse into a future where refueling takes minutes and the only emission is water.
Imagine filling up your car in five minutes, driving 250 kilometers, and leaving nothing behind but water vapor.
That future just became reality for business travelers in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Three Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles joined the Ezi Car Rental fleet on August 17, marking the first time anyone in the country can rent a hydrogen-powered car.
The timing couldn't be better for curious drivers. Ezi is offering an introductory rate of just $79 per day for eligible business customers who book before September 30, with insurance and hydrogen fuel included.
The Mirai works like an electric car with a twist. Instead of plugging in for hours, drivers fill up with hydrogen in three to five minutes at a nearby refueling station. Three high-pressure tanks feed hydrogen into a fuel cell stack, where it reacts with oxygen to generate electricity that powers the motor.
The technology isn't just clean. It's practical. While battery electric vehicles can take 30 minutes or more for a quick charge, hydrogen refueling mirrors the gas station experience drivers already know.
"Most of our customers have never seen a hydrogen vehicle, let alone driven one," said Ezi Car Rental chief executive Anthony Kearns. "That's exactly why we wanted to be part of this."
The second-generation Mirai represents a significant upgrade from earlier models. Toyota positioned it as a luxury sedan with rear-wheel drive, premium interior touches, and a five-star safety rating. It produces 134 kilowatts of power and accelerates smoothly with 300 newton-meters of torque.
The Ripple Effect
This small fleet of three cars represents something bigger than transportation options. It's putting breakthrough technology into the hands of regular people, not just early adopters or industry insiders.
Toyota has been testing hydrogen vehicles in New Zealand since 2022, but those trials stayed mostly out of public reach. Now corporate travelers booking a rental car can experience the technology firsthand, ask questions, and share their experiences with colleagues and friends.
The program also signals growing infrastructure support. Hiringa Energy's hydrogen refueling station near Palmerston North Airport makes the rentals possible, and Toyota mentions Hamilton and Tauranga as potential future locations as the network expands.
Toyota New Zealand chief executive Tatsuya Ishikawa emphasized the educational value. "The best way to understand new vehicle technologies is to experience them first-hand," he said.
The initiative fits into Toyota's broader strategy of offering multiple clean vehicle options, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel-cell models. With approximately 17 Mirai vehicles to distribute around New Zealand, the company expects the Manawatū fleet to grow over time.
For now, hydrogen motoring remains a regional experience with its 250-kilometer rental limit and single-airport availability. But every transformative technology starts somewhere, and letting everyday drivers experience zero-emission motoring that refuels as quickly as a conventional car could accelerate the clean transportation future we all need.
