Church Collapse Averted Thanks to Safety Officials

A collapsing church building in Edo State, Nigeria could have been a tragedy, but zero injuries were reported thanks to vigilant safety officials who had already stopped activities at the site.

The two-story structure along Palace Road in Egor Local Government Area crumbled during unauthorized renovations. The building housed both a church and Faith Above Educational Academy, but school wasn't in session when it fell.

The Edo State Development and Building Control Agency had visited the property multiple times to warn the owners. Officials rejected the building plans because the structure didn't meet safety standards and the renovation work used improper concrete mixtures on an already aging foundation.

Despite repeated warnings and official orders to stop construction, the property owners continued working. The building ultimately collapsed, proving the safety inspectors right.

Igabali Imoisili Darlington, the agency's managing director, confirmed that authorities had done everything possible to prevent the disaster. His team documented their visits and warnings, creating a clear record of the building's dangers.

The property is now sealed and marked for demolition. State officials announced they will prosecute the owner as a warning to others who might ignore building regulations.
