Circus Bear Retta Transforms After Armenia Rescue

Retta the bear spent years locked in a cage barely bigger than a closet, performing as a sad attraction for resort visitors in Armenia. Today, she runs freely through a spacious sanctuary, feeling grass beneath her paws for the first time in her life.

International Animal Rescue and their Armenian partners at the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets rescued Retta from her concrete prison. The 12-year-old brown bear had been confined in isolation with no room to explore or play, living a shadow of the life bears deserve in the wild.

The rescue team transported Retta to a wildlife rescue center in Urtsadzor, Armenia, where she now lives in comfort. Her transformation has been so remarkable that the UK-based charity shared her story to celebrate World Bear Day on March 23.

Before-and-after photos show the stunning change. In earlier images, Retta appears listless and confined in her tiny concrete space. Recent photos capture her exploring her new home, displaying natural bear behaviors she was never allowed to express during her captivity.
