Kenya Rangers Rescue Bull Elephant Trapped in Sinkhole

A bull elephant stuck shoulder-deep in a muddy sinkhole had one chance at survival: a team of rangers who refused to give up.

On February 25, Kenya Wildlife Service responded to reports of a trapped elephant in Chakama, a region about 30 miles inland from the Indian Ocean. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a conservation organization that has already rescued 17 elephants from sinkholes in 2025 alone, jumped into action.

Pilot Roan Carr-Hartley flew to the scene and met with the Kulalu anti-poaching team and KWS rangers. The situation was dire. The hole was too deep and steep for the elephant to climb out on his own, but he could still move around inside, making it nearly impossible to position rescue straps safely.

The panicked elephant made it dangerous for rangers to approach. Carr-Hartley called for backup from a mobile vet unit, but the veterinarian was miles away handling another rescue. The team made a tough call: they would attempt the rescue without sedating the bull.

After careful maneuvering, the rangers finally managed to loop straps behind the elephant and attached them to a vehicle. Inch by inch, they pulled the massive animal from his muddy prison.

Something remarkable happened during the rescue. Video footage shows the elephant's body language shift as he seemed to realize the humans were there to help, not harm him. He stopped struggling and let the team do their work.
