Claflin Wins Second CIAA Softball Title, Heads to NCAAs

Claflin University's softball team just proved that champions know how to answer back under pressure.

The top-seeded Panthers captured the 2026 CIAA Softball Championship on Saturday in Orangeburg, South Carolina, edging Winston-Salem State 7-6 in a nail-biter. The victory marks only the second conference championship in program history and earns Claflin an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.

This wasn't a blowout. Winston-Salem State came ready to fight, with Jyla Thomas and Aaliyah Rodriguez launching back-to-back home runs in the third inning to tie the game and electrify the championship crowd.

But Claflin refused to fold. Aryana Meadows answered immediately with an RBI double to reclaim the lead, showing the kind of resilience that defines championship teams.

The fourth inning became the turning point. After capitalizing on defensive mistakes, Claflin's Aniyah Jackson stepped to the plate and delivered the biggest swing of the day, a two-run homer to left field that gave the Panthers critical breathing room.

Winston-Salem kept battling. Koralie Morin crushed a two-run shot in the fourth to keep the Rams within striking distance, but Claflin's pitching staff held strong when it mattered most.

Sydra Pendleton closed out the championship in style, retiring the side in order in the seventh inning to preserve the one-run victory. The Panthers improved to 31-12 overall, capping a historic postseason run.
