Clean Energy Adds Record 693 GW, Saves $500 Billion

The planet just hit a clean energy milestone that seemed impossible a decade ago.

In 2025, countries around the world added 693 gigawatts of renewable power capacity, shattering all previous records. That's enough solar panels and wind turbines to power hundreds of millions of homes without burning a single drop of fossil fuel.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) released the breakthrough numbers during Climate Week in New York. Their assessment, developed with the Turkish Presidency of COP31 and the Global Renewables Alliance, shows clean energy isn't just growing—it's exploding.

This historic expansion is already putting money back in people's pockets. The shift away from expensive fossil fuels has saved nearly $500 billion in energy costs globally, making electricity more affordable for families and businesses alike.

Global renewable capacity now stands at 5.15 terawatts. To put that in perspective, that's like having thousands of traditional power plants working around the clock, except these run on sunshine and wind instead of coal and gas.

The Ripple Effect

This clean energy boom is creating waves of positive change far beyond just electricity bills. Manufacturing jobs are popping up in solar panel and wind turbine factories across the globe, bringing economic opportunity to communities that need it most.

Air quality is improving in cities that have made the switch, giving children cleaner air to breathe and reducing respiratory illnesses. Countries are becoming more energy independent, no longer relying on imported fuels that drain their budgets and pollute their skies.

The momentum is real and accelerating. Investment in clean energy reached $2 trillion in 2025, showing that businesses and governments see renewable power as the smart financial choice, not just the environmentally responsible one.

To meet the goals set at COP28, the world needs to reach 11.2 terawatts of renewable capacity by 2030. That means ramping up to about 1,200 gigawatts of new installations annually, roughly 73% more than the record-breaking 2025 figure.

The challenge is significant but achievable. The technology works, costs keep falling, and the blueprint for success is already written in the wins of 2025.
