Clean Energy Grew 7X Faster Than Fossil Fuels in 2024

The world's shift to clean energy just hit a major milestone that proves the green transition isn't just happening—it's accelerating.

Renewable electricity generation grew by 9.8% in 2024, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency's latest report. That's seven times faster than fossil fuel growth, which limped forward at just 1.4% over the same period.

Clean energy now accounts for 31.7% of all electricity generated worldwide, producing 9,836 terawatt hours. That's enough power to run every home, business, and electric vehicle on Earth for more than three months straight.

Solar and wind power led the charge, confirming what energy experts have predicted for years: these technologies aren't the future anymore. They're the present.

Asia topped the charts with the strongest performance, generating 4,589 TWh of renewable electricity—a 14.3% increase driven by massive solar and wind installations. Europe followed with 1,758 TWh, up 7.2%, while North America contributed 1,535 TWh with a 5.8% increase.

The Middle East delivered the biggest surprise with 17.3% growth, the highest regional rate globally. Even smaller regions showed solid gains, with Africa up 5.7% and Oceania growing by 3.4%.

The numbers get even more impressive when you look at new capacity. Renewable energy installations reached a peak of 693 gigawatts in 2025, bringing total renewable capacity to 5.2 terawatts—nearly half of all global electricity capacity.

That means one out of every two watts of electricity-generating capacity installed worldwide now comes from renewable sources. Just 25 years ago, that figure was barely worth measuring.

The Ripple Effect

This acceleration means cleaner air in cities from Beijing to Los Angeles. It means more stable electricity prices for families as fuel costs matter less. It means thousands of new jobs in solar installation, wind turbine manufacturing, and grid modernization.

Most importantly, it proves that momentum has shifted. Renewables aren't just competing with fossil fuels anymore—they're dominating new energy investments and winning on economics, not just environmental benefits.

The data confirms what communities worldwide are already experiencing: the energy transformation is real, measurable, and picking up speed with each passing year.
