Clean Energy Wins Majority on Arizona Power Board

A grassroots coalition of clean energy supporters just secured control of the board overseeing one of Arizona's largest power utilities, marking a major shift for more than 1 million customers.

Salt River Project held elections this week for the board that sets policy for its power utility. For years, these elections flew under the radar, with only about 7,500 votes cast in recent cycles.

This year was different. More than 36,000 ballots poured in after conservative group Turning Point Action launched a massive campaign backing traditional energy candidates, many of whom already served on the board.

A competing slate of clean energy advocates fought back, knocking on doors and rallying voters with support from environmental groups. Their message was simple: push SRP toward more solar panels, battery storage, and renewable energy options.

The clean energy team won five seats, giving them an 8-6 majority on the board. Two seats flipped from incumbents backed by Turning Point Action, despite the conservative group's heavy investment in voter outreach.

"I think it's a new day," said Sandra Kennedy, a clean energy candidate and former state lawmaker who retained her board seat. She explained that the board majority matters more than the president and vice president roles, which Turning Point candidates won.

The president only votes to break ties. With eight clean energy advocates on a fourteen-member board, Kennedy expects few tie votes will ever occur.

The Ripple Effect

This election shows how engaged citizens can reshape energy policy at the local level, even when facing well-funded opposition. The voter turnout increase of nearly 400% proves people care deeply about their energy future when given clear choices.

The victory could accelerate Arizona's renewable energy adoption at a critical time for climate action. SRP serves major parts of the Phoenix metro area, and board decisions about solar and battery investments will impact both energy bills and carbon emissions for years to come.

Critics noted that SRP's unusual voting system, which gives votes based on land ownership rather than one-person-one-vote, still favored wealthy landowners. The clean energy slate likely would have won by larger margins under a standard voting system.

Environmental groups backing the slate say this proves everyday customers want accountability and lower bills through renewable energy. They turned out despite a system that wasn't designed with them in mind.

Democracy worked, even in an obscure utility election that most people never knew existed.
