Cleveland Clinic Delivers Prescriptions by Drone in Minutes

Getting to the pharmacy when you're sick or caring for someone else can feel impossible. Now, Cleveland Clinic patients near Beachwood, Ohio, can have their prescriptions lowered into their yards by drone in minutes instead.

The Cleveland Clinic just launched its prescription drone delivery program with Zipline, marking the first long-term deployment of prescription drone delivery by a U.S. health system. While other hospitals have tested medical drones, this program is designed for ongoing delivery to patients' homes.

The service currently covers eligible addresses within five miles of Cleveland Clinic's Beachwood Administrative Campus. The program initially serves certain patients already enrolled in the clinic's pharmacy home delivery program, and participation is completely voluntary with no extra fees.

Here's how it works: A pharmacy technician places packaged medication into a secure Zipline drop box. An autonomous electric drone retrieves the order and flies to the patient's address, staying as high as 300 feet above the ground. A small delivery pod then descends on a tether, places the prescription at the selected spot, and rises back to the drone.

The entire process takes under five minutes on average from drop box to doorstep. Patients can track their delivery through the MyChart messaging portal and choose where on their property they want the package to land, whether front yard or backyard. They can even schedule delivery for when they'll be home.

The program currently covers shelf-stable prescriptions, though controlled substances won't travel by drone at this time. Zipline says it doesn't know what's inside each order and receives only the information needed to complete delivery and follow healthcare requirements.

The Ripple Effect: This technology could transform healthcare access far beyond Cleveland. Rural patients who face long drives to pharmacies could soon receive urgent medications in minutes instead of hours. The same drone technology is already being tested to transport lab samples, blood, and donor matching materials between smaller communities and larger hospital hubs, where timing can impact diagnoses and treatment outcomes.
