Cleveland Driver and Dog Save Two Lives From Burning Home

When Richard Keith Taylor spotted flames glowing through a window on Cleveland's Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, he didn't hesitate. He pulled over, grabbed his horn, and ran toward the burning home while his wife Melanie and their dog Ace waited in the car.

As Taylor approached the porch, he saw an elderly woman step into the doorway before turning back into the smoke. He pushed through the security door, found her inside, and carried her out as conditions rapidly worsened.

The timing couldn't have been closer. Just as Taylor crossed the porch with the woman in his arms, the large front window exploded. Flames burst forward and ignited the porch roof, turning an already dangerous rescue into a race against time.

Taylor brought the woman to his vehicle to shield her from the smoke and cold while emergency crews rushed to the scene. Firefighters arrived quickly and worked to extinguish the blaze, eventually bringing it under control.

With the immediate danger handled, Taylor took Ace for a walk nearby. The energetic dog was clearly excited by all the commotion surrounding the fire trucks and emergency responders.

After the walk, Taylor tied Ace to a fence post near the driveway so he could watch the crews work. That's when something unusual happened.

Ace started pulling hard against his leash, sniffing intensely and straining toward a boarded-up basement window. The behavior was different enough that Taylor knew something was wrong.

He quickly alerted a battalion chief on scene. "He smells something down there," Taylor explained.

Firefighters returned to the basement to investigate. Behind a closed door in one of the rooms, they found a small brown dog, frightened but unharmed. The animal had survived the fire without smoke or heat damage.
