Coach Travel Cuts 1.5M Tonnes CO₂ in One Year

Choosing the bus instead of driving or flying just became one of the easiest ways to fight climate change.

Transport company Flix announced that its passengers avoided 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2025 simply by opting for coach travel. The Munich-based firm connects travelers to 8,700 destinations worldwide, offering a practical alternative that's better for the planet and easier on the wallet.

The numbers tell a compelling story. Riding a FlixBus in Europe produces at least five times less CO₂ per kilometer than driving the same route alone. On longer journeys like Berlin to Rome, emissions drop by up to 84% compared to private car use.

The difference becomes even more dramatic when compared to flying. Domestic air travel generates up to 10 times more CO₂ per kilometer than taking the coach.

CEO André Schwämmlein believes sustainable choices should be available to everyone. "Individual actions, multiplied, can drive massive change," he said. "Enabling that transformation is our responsibility."

The company is backing up those words with action. Around 120 coaches in the fleet now run on electric power or biofuels, with more conversions planned this year.

The Ripple Effect

The benefits extend beyond carbon savings. Nearly a third of Flix's destinations have populations below 20,000 and often lack rail connections. These shared coach services are opening up travel options for communities that major transport networks overlook.

By making collective transport affordable and widespread, the model removes barriers that once made sustainable choices feel like luxuries. When choosing the greener option becomes the easier option, millions of everyday travelers become part of the solution without even trying.

Flix also achieved a milestone in transparency this year by obtaining independent verification of its entire carbon footprint. The company's sustainability report follows European Union standards and includes over 200 indicators covering environmental and social impact.

Every seat filled on a shared coach means one less car on the road and cleaner air for everyone.
