Japan's Hydrogen Ship Engine Cuts Emissions by 95%

The breakthrough comes at a critical time. International shipping produces nearly 3% of global carbon emissions, and the industry has committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. Until now, few viable alternatives to fossil fuels existed for powering massive cargo vessels across oceans.
The engine uses a high-pressure direct injection system that sprays hydrogen fuel directly into the cylinders, creating stable combustion. Safety features include reinforced construction to prevent leaks and double-walled piping for all hydrogen supply lines. Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, Japan's ship classification society, conducted approval testing and gave the engine a green light.
The technology emerged from Japan's Green Innovation Fund Project, a government-backed initiative developing next-generation ship engines. Japan Engine partnered with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Solutions to make the hydrogen engine a reality.
In January 2027, the engine will be installed on a new 17,500-ton multipurpose cargo vessel built for shipping giants Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and MOL Drybulk. Kawasaki will supply the hydrogen fuel system and develop the bunkering equipment needed to refuel ships with liquefied hydrogen at ports.
The ship will begin sea trials before starting demonstration testing in April 2028. These real-world tests will evaluate how the engine performs during actual shipping operations, measuring durability and efficiency under ocean conditions.

The demonstration vessel will serve as a floating laboratory, generating data that other shipbuilders and operators need to confidently invest in hydrogen power. Port infrastructure will evolve alongside the ships, creating hydrogen refueling networks at major shipping hubs.
