Cobb County Students Win $24M in National Merit Scholarships

Fifteen high school seniors from Cobb County, Georgia, are celebrating after earning National Merit Scholarships that place them among the top academic achievers in the nation. The students from eight different high schools will share in nearly $24 million in scholarship funds distributed to just 6,700 students nationwide.

The awards recognize more than just good grades. Students first had to score exceptionally high on the PSAT/NMSQT, then prove themselves through their academic records, leadership roles, extracurricular activities, and potential for college success.

Six students earned the prestigious National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, including Eugene Kang and Anna Yang from Harrison High School, Li-Yen Chou from Walton High School, Ishaan Kesar Marwaha from Pope High School, Amulya Patil from Campbell High School, and Vidya Sinha from Wheeler High School. These awards come directly from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's funds.

Nine additional students won college-sponsored Merit Scholarships worth $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years. Two students earned Vanderbilt University scholarships, while others secured awards from the University of Alabama, University of Georgia, Texas A&M University, and the University of Texas at Dallas.

The students plan to pursue diverse career fields. Future paths include medicine, computer science, mechanical engineering, orthopedics, software engineering, business, industrial engineering, and materials science.

These fifteen scholars represent the strength of Cobb County's entire school system. When students from eight different high schools all achieve national recognition, it shows that excellence isn't concentrated in just one place but spread throughout the district.
