Colombia's New 180 MW Solar Park Powers 525,000 Homes

A sprawling solar farm spanning more than 1,000 acres in northern Colombia has started delivering clean electricity to homes and businesses across the country.

The Atlántico solar park, located between the municipalities of Sabanalarga and Usiacurí, officially began supplying power to Colombia's national grid this month. With 180 megawatts of capacity spread across more than 400,000 solar panels, the facility will generate enough electricity annually to power an estimated 525,000 homes.

Energy company Enel invested roughly $200 million to bring the project to life. The construction phase alone created about 1,000 jobs for local workers, bringing economic opportunity to communities in Colombia's Atlántico department.

Getting all that solar power from the farm to people's homes required some clever engineering. ISA Energía, the company that built the connection infrastructure, installed a 3.5 kilometer transmission line linking the solar park to the existing grid. About 500 meters of that high voltage line runs underground, an innovative approach that saves space and makes better use of the land.

The project represents a significant milestone in Colombia's push toward cleaner energy sources. It's part of a major 2024 government auction that brought 33 new generation plants online, adding more than 1,200 megawatts of renewable capacity to the country's power supply.

The Ripple Effect

The Atlántico solar park isn't working alone. Enel has integrated it into a broader solar hub in the region alongside another project called Guayepo III. Together, these two facilities bring nearly 400 megawatts of clean energy capacity to Colombia's Caribbean coast, creating a renewable energy powerhouse that will reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels for decades to come.

This expansion strategy means cleaner air for communities, more stable energy prices protected from fossil fuel market swings, and meaningful progress toward Colombia's climate commitments. Every year, the Atlántico park will prevent thousands of tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Colombia is proving that developing nations can lead the way in the global transition to renewable energy.
