Grand Junction Regional Airport opened a covered parking structure Tuesday that generates all the electricity needed to power its passenger terminal. The 668-kilowatt solar array sits on top of 108 new parking spaces, including seven equipped with electric vehicle chargers.

The structure does double duty in a way that makes perfect sense. While travelers' cars stay cool and protected from Colorado weather, the rooftop panels soak up enough sunshine to offset the terminal's entire electric bill.

"It immediately offsets all of the electric used in the terminal," said Angela Padalecki, CEO at Grand Junction Regional Airport. The setup also prepares the airport for electric aircraft, which will demand far more power than today's planes.

The project came in under its $7.4 million budget and qualified for clean energy tax credits. Airport officials funded it through a state infrastructure loan, making the financial math work without federal grants.

This parking lot shows how airports can tackle multiple challenges with one smart structure. Grand Junction is preparing for growth after serving a record 639,000 passengers in 2025, and officials expect even more this year.

The covered spaces cost travelers nothing extra for now. Once new parking equipment arrives early next year, the airport will charge a premium for the covered spots, creating a revenue stream that makes the investment pay off faster.

Commissioner Cody Kennedy said the project exceeded his original vision. The team expanded the scope during planning to maximize both the weather protection and energy generation.

The airport chose the location with future expansion in mind, though no additional covered parking is planned yet. Padalecki noted that growing the solar setup depends on available subsidies to make the numbers work.

Meanwhile, seven EV charging stations give electric vehicle owners a place to plug in, and the extra electricity flowing through the airport grid prepares the facility for technologies that don't exist yet in commercial aviation.
