😊 Feel Good

Electric travel trailer startup Lightship is expanding its Colorado facility by more than double to meet soaring demand while keeping 80% of production American-made. The company is also making its most popular battery upgrade standard and lowering the starting price.

An electric RV startup is proving that American manufacturing can thrive in the clean energy economy, and they're expanding fast to keep up with customer demand.

Lightship, which builds all-electric travel trailers in Broomfield, Colorado, just broke ground on a massive expansion that will more than double its production space. The company is adding 44,000 square feet to its existing 32,000-square-foot facility, with operations in the new space expected to begin this summer.

The expansion comes after the company's launch edition trailer, the AE.1 Cosmos, completely sold out during early production. CEO Toby Kraus says the move represents a commitment to domestic manufacturing at a time when many competitors are outsourcing overseas.

Lightship currently sources 80% of its trailer components locally in the United States. The expanded facility will allow the company to increase that vertical integration even further while creating high-skill manufacturing jobs in Colorado's growing mobility sector.

The company is also making its electric trailers more accessible. After noticing that over 90% of customers were choosing the premium 77 kWh battery pack, Lightship decided to make it standard across all models. The move brings the starting price down to $157,500 from the previous top-tier cost of $184,000.

Co-founder Ben Parker says building in America allows the company to respond to customer feedback much faster than traditional RV manufacturers. The direct-to-consumer approach means real-world user experiences can quickly shape product improvements.

The Ripple Effect

Lightship's growth signals a broader shift in how Americans think about travel and energy. Electric travel trailers offer a quieter, cleaner camping experience while reducing dependence on fossil fuels during road trips.

The Colorado expansion also demonstrates that green technology companies can create quality jobs domestically. As the facility grows over the next 18 months, it will bring more employment opportunities to a region positioning itself as a hub for next-generation transportation.

The streamlined product lineup gives customers more flexibility to customize trailers for different uses, from weekend getaways to full-time living. Options now include configurations for home backup power, extended travel, short-term rentals, and permanent residence.

By combining American manufacturing with customer-driven innovation, Lightship is showing that sustainable products don't require sacrificing quality or jobs to overseas production. The company's success suggests there's strong market demand for cleaner camping solutions made close to home.
