Comcast Volunteers Pack 1,788 School Kits in 2.5 Hours

When 20 Comcast volunteers showed up at a Portland warehouse in August, they had just 2.5 hours to make a difference for students heading back to school.

By the time they finished, they had packed 1,788 complete school supply kits destined for Title I schools across Multnomah County and portions of Washington County. Each kit contains everything a student needs to walk into their classroom with confidence: backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other essential materials.

The volunteers worked through Comcast's Team UP program, which connects employees with year-round service opportunities in their communities. Their partnership with Schoolhouse Supplies, a Portland organization dedicated to educational equity, generated more than $2,000 in added value for the nonprofit.

More importantly, the volunteer effort means Schoolhouse Supplies can now extend its reach to an estimated four to five additional schools this year. That translates to thousands more students who won't have to worry about whether they can afford the supplies their teachers require.

Schoolhouse Supplies runs a Free Store for Teachers and coordinates community partnerships to ensure every child has access to quality education tools, regardless of family income. The organization serves under-resourced students and classrooms throughout the Portland metropolitan area.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond the immediate impact of school supplies reaching students, Comcast's involvement highlights how corporate volunteer programs can multiply a nonprofit's capacity. Those 2.5 hours of volunteer labor allowed Schoolhouse Supplies to serve more schools than it could have managed alone.

The company also supports student success through connectivity programs that help families access online learning resources throughout the school year. When combined with hands-on community partnerships like Tools for Schools, these efforts address multiple barriers students face.

Every packed kit represents more than just materials. It's a message to students that their community believes in them and wants to see them succeed.
