Copenhagen Kayakers Rally for Greenland's Indigenous Rights

Hundreds of kayakers transformed Copenhagen's harbor into a sea of red and white flags on Sunday, celebrating Greenland's indigenous culture and supporting its people's right to self-determination.

The waterborne parade marked International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Organized by Uagut, an association for Greenlanders in Denmark, and ActionAid Denmark, the event drew crowds who gathered on bridges and quays to cheer the paddlers on.

"It's been a very tough year to be a Greenlander. We have felt threatened and we have been fighting for our own identity, for our people and the right to our land," said Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut.

The timing was significant. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has faced repeated pressure this year from political forces seeking control of the mineral-rich island.

Kayaking holds deep cultural significance for Greenlandic people. The traditional boats have been used for thousands of years by indigenous communities for hunting and transportation across Arctic waters.
