When Carrie Jansen and her husband Nic wanted to tell their family they weren't having kids, they knew a simple conversation wouldn't cut it. So they grabbed a camera, dressed up nice, and staged a maternity photoshoot with a twist ending that delighted millions.

The timing couldn't be better. Recent data shows that 47% of adults under 50 without children say they're unlikely to ever have them, up 10 percentage points since 2018.

Among women ages 25 to 29, about 63% are now childless, compared to 50% in 2014. Being childfree isn't a fringe choice anymore; it's nearly half of all adults.

Yet societal pressure persists, especially on women. The expectation that women should become mothers remains strong, even as the statistics show choosing otherwise is completely normal.

"Having children is definitely a hot topic, and one that is evolving in this generation like so many other social issues," Carrie says. "It's exciting to find others that feel the same way I do."

The reasons for choosing a childfree life are deeply personal: cost, freedom, career goals, or simply not wanting to. And thanks to couples like Carrie and Nic who bring the conversation into the open with humor and honesty, those expectations are finally starting to shift.
