Cousins Meet After 80 Years, DNA Test Ends Holocaust Loss

When Adriana Turk's brother died, the 74-year-old Australian thought she had lost her last living family member. Her father's relatives had perished in the Holocaust, or so she believed for her entire life.

Feeling alone and grieving, Adriana decided to take a DNA test through MyHeritage. The results shocked her: she had more than 50 relatives she never knew existed.

With help from a MyHeritage researcher, Adriana connected with her second cousin Raanan Gidron in Israel. Their first video call sparked an immediate bond, and this August, Adriana boarded a plane to meet him face to face.

Raanan waited at Ben-Gurion Airport as Adriana stepped off her 14,000 kilometer journey. When they saw each other, they embraced and cried.

"Here is my long-lost cousin," Adriana said through tears. "Here you are."

Raanan described the moment as "magical," like meeting a family member he already knew. Despite never having met in person, the connection felt natural and warm.

During her visit, Adriana met even more of her Israeli family. She was moved by how much they looked like her father, seeing his face reflected in theirs after so many years.

The cousins spent their time together sharing meals and talking openly about the Holocaust. Their parents' generation had struggled to discuss those painful experiences, but now Adriana and her cousins could finally process the trauma together.

Adriana called it "international group therapy." For the first time in her life, she could cry about the Holocaust with people who understood it the same way she did.

Adriana spent decades believing she was alone in the world, the last thread of her father's family line. Today, she's surrounded by relatives who have welcomed her with open arms and open invitations to visit.

"I feel like I've been born again through this experience," she says. The grief and isolation that once overwhelmed her has transformed into connection and hope.

Her younger Israeli relatives are already planning trips to Australia. What began as a solitary DNA test has blossomed into a growing circle of family gatherings, shared memories, and healing.

"This new family is healing me," Adriana says, and her words carry the weight of 80 years of loss finally finding light.
