Nigerian Official Freed After 11 Months in Captivity

Mohammed Wawa spent 330 days dreaming of a simple bath.

The Niger State electoral commissioner finally got that chance Wednesday night when he was released after 11 months in captivity. His family paid ransom to armed kidnappers who had held him since last September.

Wawa was abducted along the New Bussa-Ibbi road while returning from his hometown. The kidnappers initially released him after receiving 40 million naira, but kept him until this week when additional payment was made.

During his captivity, Wawa survived on one meal per day of corn flour and traditional soup. He drank the same water as cattle and went without bathing for over 300 days.

"When they handed me over to my family, the first thing I did was take a one-hour bath," Wawa told relatives. His physical condition showed the toll of his ordeal, and family members are calling for comprehensive medical care.

The Bright Side

Wawa's return reunites him with loved ones who never stopped working for his freedom. His family expressed gratitude to everyone who supported them during the difficult months and prayed for others still held captive to find their way home soon.

The release also brings attention to the need for stronger security measures along remote highways in Niger State, where kidnapping remains a persistent challenge.

His freedom reminds us that even after the darkest nights, families can be made whole again.
