Cyclist Wins 50th World Cup After Beating Two Flat Tires

When your tire goes flat during a championship race, most people would call it bad luck. When it happens twice, most would call it over. Mathieu van der Poel called it a challenge.

The cyclocross world champion was cruising toward another easy victory Saturday in Maasmechelen, Belgium, when disaster struck on lap four. A front wheel puncture sent him sliding from first to fifth place, 13 seconds behind the leaders.

After a quick bike change, van der Poel began one of the most thrilling comebacks in cyclocross history. He tore through the sandpit sections faster than anyone else, making up ground with every pedal stroke. Lap after lap, he closed the gap.

Just as he regained the lead 43 minutes into the race, another puncture threatened to end his hopes. "Yeah, a little bit," he admitted when asked if he panicked. "To be honest I thought it was going to be really difficult to get the job done again."

But van der Poel had built enough of an advantage that he could change bikes again and still cross the finish line alone. The victory marked his 11th win this season and preserved his perfect 100 percent win rate for 2026.

The win meant more than just another trophy. It was van der Poel's 50th World Cup victory of his career, tying the all-time record set by cyclocross legend Sven Nys. With another race scheduled for Sunday, he has the chance to break the record outright.

Van der Poel acknowledged the difficulty of the course, which caused several riders to crash and make mistakes throughout the race. "I definitely hit some stones today," he said simply.
