Dad Eats 48 Gummy Bears With Toothpick, Breaks World Record

Matthew Powers spent his childhood reading Guinness World Records books, dreaming of one day seeing his own name in those pages. On April 4th, the 38-year-old veterinarian from Norwell, Massachusetts made that dream come true with gummy bears and a cocktail stick.

Powers shattered the world record for most gummy bears eaten with a cocktail stick in one minute, downing 48 of the tiny treats. He beat the previous record of 38, set just weeks earlier by Austria's Wolfgang Schwarz, by a full 10 gummy bears.

The journey to record-breaking glory wasn't just about grabbing a bag and getting started. Powers, who has always loved gummy bears as his go-to snack, bought every brand he could find in his area to test which ones worked best.

"There are big differences in the toughness of different gummy bear brands and flavours," Powers explained. He discovered that Albanese brand gummy bears gave him the best chance at success.

The preparation paid off in ways Powers didn't expect. During practice runs at home, his personal best was 36 gummy bears. He only set out 50 for the actual attempt because he never thought he'd eat that many.

When the timer started, something amazing happened. Powers was in the zone, fueled by determination and maybe a bit of competitive hunger. By the time 60 seconds ended, he had demolished 48 gummy bears and secured his place in history.

Why This Inspires

Powers lives with his wife, also a veterinarian, and their three boys who couldn't have been prouder of their dad. "My kids were so proud, they were telling everyone that I broke the record," he said.

This wasn't about growing the longest fingernails or memorizing endless numbers. Powers knew himself well enough to pick a challenge that matched his strengths and passions. Years ago, he considered making the world's largest gummy bear but never got it off the ground. When he discovered this eating record, he knew it was achievable.

"I was ecstatic when I broke the record and got the results verified," Powers shared. "To achieve a lifelong goal like this was so special."
